Boudica

Boudica was found unconscious, bald and emaciated in a manure pit underneath a battery egg shed. The shed looking up from the manure pit where she was found looked like this below:

Boudica was picked up from the manure pile with another hen, her name is Willow. They were both so close to death that they had drips inserted on the way home. Their rescuer did not think either of them would make the trip home.

Boudica was named after the Queen of the British Iceni tribe, a Celtic tribe who led an uprising against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. This little hen had strength in her just like Queen Boudica.

After months of intensive nursing and rehabilitation, Boudica and Willow started to be able to walk on their own and eat on their own again. They became the best of friends, looking after each other all the time.  Once they became well enough, they both came to live at Lefty’s Place and two cheekier hens I never did meet. Bo and Willow would run around me whilst I was shooting something and start pecking at my back . It was like their special game. These days Boudica is one of the top hens in the flock. She stands tall and brave and is always the first for food and for the best spots in the coop.
