Maggie

A broiler chicken with a sense of humour, that was my Maggie, she was so funny. She was rescued in early 2012 from a broiler (meat) chicken farm at about 4 weeks old. The farm she came from is pictured below.

I named her Maggie Matron Sloan after a character in the Australian drama, “A Country Practice” because of her pear shaped body and her great sense of humour. Maggie loved people, she was always with me, never scared. Maggie was the one who would duck and weave through ten ex-battery hens to grab the veggie sausage. Despite her ever growing size, she was so incredibly agile. She would climb up the ladder at night and sleep high on the perches with the ex-battery hens! No other broiler chickens could do that because of their weight, but Maggie was determined to sleep up there every single night. My fondest memories are watching Maggie climb up that ladder each night. The look on her face once she made it to the top always made me smile.

Maggie passed away in early 2013. Like all broiler chickens, her body was not designed for longevity. It was designed for eating. She died of heart related problems. I miss that funny girl so. She loved life with vigour.
