Neptune

Neptune used to live in a cage egg farm. Her farm was depopulated earlier this year and she grabbed and thrown in to the transport crate with such aggression that her legs were both broken. She endured the entire trip to the abattoir with two broken legs. She waited hours until the rescue team showed up and found her. The cruelty in the egg industry is out of control. No one cares. They are packed in trucks with less care than celery.
The following photos are courtesy of Burwood Bird Vet who helped Neptune and her carer on their journey towards healing.
The thing about these hens is that they are so determined to live that they just never give up. Neptune didn’t give up. Her carer didn’t give up and now she will live out her life being able to be a chicken. She spent a great deal of time recovering in a special chicken wheelchair  and had to be crop fed for quite some time, but now i can’t get her to stop eating. She’s not too sure of me yet and it will take some time for her to be accepted here because she’s such a timid, submissive, fairy hen, but she will be ok.
She will never know such cruelty again.

Six months after rescue and beautiful Neptune has finally found out who she is. She’s grown in confidence and has learnt how to be a chicken and how to love her life. Neptune was rescued from the abattoir earlier this year, she suffered two broken legs and broken wings. Her recovery was long and she spent many months in a little chicken wheelchair. My friend nursed this girl through the worst, crop feeding her through the times she wouldn’t eat and hoping she’d survive. Look at her now. My heart honestly swells when I see her trotting around the paddock. When she trots up to me incessantly talking and looking me straight in the eyes asking for more sunflower seeds, I truly feel those tears of mine welling up. She is the sweetest hen, her nature is so soft and gentle and there are times my sister and I catch glimpses of her and think of Da-Marshy.

What a pleasure it is to know this beautiful hen who has experienced the worst of all things and has come through it with the sunlight and the wind behind her pushing her on to happiness.
